New Books: 'SCAN' Full of Bateman Weirdness

     By J.P. Trostle
"SCAN," the new graphic novel by editorial cartoonist Scott Bateman, is the first book I know of to come with its own soundtrack. The 144-page black and white novel – which may or may not be about the end of the world – comes with a 17 song CD performed by "The Scott Batemans." It also comes with a separate blank "End Days" notebook so you can record any signs of the coming apocolypse to send to Bateman, making it arguably the first interactive graphic novel as well.
Using cartoons, graphs, charts, lists and diagrams as narrative devices, "SCAN" features something like 60 characters in a small American town that is suddenly inundated by graffiti appearing in unlikely places.
The novel is available through Bateman's site, www.batemania.com, where he is offering what he calls "The Full Meal Deal": An autographed and numbered first edition copy of SCAN (only 200 copies in the first run), SCAN: The Original Soundtrack, and your very own "So, It's The End Days Workbook," all for $20 (includes shipping). Or you can just get the book for $14.
If you're a fan of Scott Bateman's unique work, you'll probably like "SCAN."

     Cartoonists Fondly Recall Clinton
Dorrance Publishing Co has released "Hail to the Thief," a 116-page paperback that collects 216 Clinton era cartoons from 17 cartoonists, including Ed Hall, J.D. Crowe, Jimmy Margulies, and more.
Edited by Dennis E. Hickey, a retired Air Force Major, the book "finds humor in Bill Clinton's scandalous presidency. From healthcare to impeachment, from draft dodging and womanizing to those eleventh-hour pardons, nothing is sacred to these satirists."
"The cartoons are arranged in chronological order, making them an outrageous historical outline of the Clintons' problems."
"Hail to the Thief" is available from Amazon.com for $17.

     Crowe Takes Off with "Moonpie"
J.D. Crowe has published "Dark Side of the MoonPie," a collection of editorial cartoons from the Mobile Register, Mobile, AL, that appeared from 2000 to 2002.
In addition to the 2000 election mess, 9/11, and Trent Lott's tongue, Crowe says the book is "devoted to Alabama's tragically generous political landscape. You'll find skeeters, hogs, a disputed governor's race, a mayor with the hots for a gal who's a little on the trashy side, and even a few scenes from Mardi Gras."
J.D. Crowe has been the staff cartoonist of the Mobile Register since 2000. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and on CNN.
The 150 page paperback is $9.95 and is available at www.crowetoons.com and Amazon.com.

Fischer Ventures a New Jesse Book
Ed Fischer, cartoonist for the Post-Bulletin of Rochester, MN, has published his tenth collection of cartoons, "The Ventura Era," a 64-page paperback covering the wacky four-year administration of Gov. Jesse Ventura.
As Ed's editor, Jon Losness, says in the Foreward, "After four years of Jesse, Minnesota will never be the same."
The book is $7.95 (only $5.95 for cartoonists) and is available directly from Ed Fischer at efischer@postbulletin.com or by calling 507-281-5119.
