A Letter from the President
Fellow Ink Rearrangers,
Itメs an insidious plot, I say, and I have had enough! I will no longer sheepishly submit to their evil demands! So join with me, my ink-smudged brothers and sisters! Raise your fist in protest and shout, we refuse to enclose another tearsheet in our award submissions!
Are you with me?
[Runs from the room shouting] ...
I certainly hope youメre with me in making plans to come to Pittsburgh June 18-21 at the luxurious Omni William Penn hotel. The convention plans are coming together nicely on what promises to be one of the most important, substantive and fun gatherings of editorial cartoonists in the history of mankind.
Hereメs just a hint of what Rob Rogers and I have cooked up for you:
ユ Al Franken, of Saturday Night Live fame and author of several books including "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot," has agreed to be our keynote speaker. He said he would be honored to be the keynote speaker for his "satirical brethren." Heメs certainly good enough, smart enough and doggone it people like him. Way to go, Rob!
ユ Weメll hear from Frank Swoboda the chairman of the Herblock Foundation.
"They are starting to get their act together," says Swoboda, "on which programs they want and how to best pursue them." He assures me that he and the 17 board members believe the AAEC and the Herb Block Foundation are natural partners, and I believe we can look forward to a wonderful relationship.
ユ Weメll have a panel discussion about a promotion "strategery" with the former White House communications director for the Reagan administration, Tom Griscom. (Heメs the guy who arranged our Rose Garden meeting with Reagan in ム86)
While weメre at it, weメll actually be promoting editorial cartooning with a few newspaper types who actually employ staff cartoonists! Weメre also inviting some newspaper types that donメt employ staff cartoonists. (Wonder if the folks at the Chicago Tribune will accept our invitation?)
ユ Weメll have a lively discussion everyone will be talking about called "The Gangs of the AAEC: the Alties vs. the Nasties." Ted Rall and Steve Kelley will conduct.
ユ Rex Babin will direct a chorus of cartoonists singing the gospel that will inspire and inform us about the work of some of the best local cartoonists. Weメll also celebrate the importance of local cartooning by adding local cartoons to our regular show. (So plan on sending one of your best local editorial cartoons with a brief description of the issue.)
ユ Weメll find out how some of us ended up drawing the way we do in "Arriving at Style," a panel discussion led by Hy Rosen. Arnold Roth, David Horsey, Joel Pett, Jim Morin, Matt Davies, and Tom Toles are teed up to show off.
ユ Weメll boat along the Three Rivers of Pittsburgh on the way to our reception at the Warhol Museum.
ユ And if the Pirates are in town, weメll be there!
This is just a small taste of many more activities already nailed down you wonメt want to miss.
So, brothers and sisters stop digging around for those contest submission tear sheets now! Thatメs an order from your president!
Bruce Almighty
[Editors note: Uh, just ignore Bruce on the tearsheets thing ... I think heメs just trying to better his odds of winning. ;) ]
