Gary Markstein
Gary Markstein is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for Copley News Service, which distributes his cartoons to over 400 newspapers. He is a former editorial cartoonist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He is currently a designer and illustrator for the newspaper. He also was an editorial cartoonist for Tribune Newspapers in Mesa, Arizona. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University in 1982.
Markstein has received numerous cartoon awards. He won the 2004 Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award, an international competition sponsored by the United Nations. He has won the 2001 and 2000 Global Media Award of Excellence. He won the Family Planning Advocates Cartoon Award in 2002, which was judged by ‘Doonesberry” creator Garry Trudeau. In 1997, Markstein received first place in the Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition. He has also won several Milwaukee Press Club and Society of Newspaper Design awards.
His work has appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, U.S. News and World Report and on ABC’s Good Morning America Sunday.
Markstein and his wife, Beck, have two young boys, Blake and Grant. For relaxation, Markstein plays guitar in a rhythm and blues band.
